Explore Atlanta: Shoyu Tamago @ Miso Izakaya
Miso Izakaya: Shoyu Tamago
The Dish:
“It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary” – Paulo Cohelo
Shoyu Tamago embodies this quote. An egg, some rice and a sauce… Individually, this would be nothing to write home about, but this dish is deceiving. It lulls you into a false sense of security and then your taste buds get hijacked. You are treated to a taste of simplicity executed at the highest level.
The literal translation of shoyu tamago is “soy sauce egg”. The egg is perfectly cooked and browned with a rich flavor. It sits delicately perched on a cylindrical bed of sushi rice that is seared to a crisp on the outside. All of this floats on a wonderfully tasty sauce at the bottom of the bowl. Simple, right?
The magic comes when you break the egg. The yellow, gooey yolk mixes in with the crispy rice and sauce and creates a symphony of flavor and texture that reminds you that good food really can make you FEEL better. Come visit Miso Izakaya, this is one of my favorite things to eat in Atlanta. Period.
The Restaurant:
Miso Izakaya is Chef Guy Wong’s modern take on a traditional izakaya – Japan’s version of an American gastropub. Most food is shareable and comes in small plates. His cuisine, including sushi is creative, flavorful, and surprisingly affordable. In addition, the bar program is excellent with a mix of traditional and specialty cocktails and a full shochu and sake menu. This is one of my go to places in Atlanta.
Miso Izakaya is located at 619, Edgewood Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30312.
